Class 642 "Djurica"

Back to Locomotives         Page two

The Roco SNCF BB63400 which will become the SZ 642

The original Roco wheels were fitted with traction tyres which made the locomotive wobble. These have been replaced with solid nickel silver wheels and the loco. now runs very smoothly. But as this is an old Roco model, the motor is not as smooth as I would like,
so a new Mashima motor has been obtained and will replace the original. As it did not have a DCC socket, I have fitted a spare one
and a decoder, as all locos. will be DCC controlled.

Above left is the frame after stripping down. Above right the buffer beam details have been filed away and the holes where the
handrails were removed have been filled. Below left the footsteps were not correct for the 642, so they were removed and new
ones made from brass sheet, epoxy resin was used to fix in place. Below right is a bogie fitted with new wheels, an original with
traction tyre is alongside.

Above left is the original Roco motor and drive system. Above right is the replacement Mashima motor and the universal jointed
drive shaft to be used.
Above is the chassis block after having the frame cut down to allow more space for the decoder and plug/socket. The frame has also been milled for a good fit for the new motor.

The next picture shows the bogies, motor and drive shafts fitted, and left is a close up of a drive shaft.

Below is after the socket mount has been made from styrene and screwed to the chassis. Likewise a styrene pad has been screwed at the other end for mounting the decoder.

Bottom shows the completed wiring and the decoder is fitted. The lighting function may be connected later.
